The summer is here and it is time for some fun in the sun. I am personally looking forward to spending more time outside, preferably on one of these beautiful beaches on the west coast of Florida.

However, before heading outside, here are some important important sun protection tips:

  • It is still best to avoid the sun during 10 am and to 4 pm when ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the strongest, which can can lead to damaging effects on the skin - if outdoor at this time seek shade
  • Wear protective clothing (broad brimmed hat, long sleeves, long pants, sun glasses with a 100% protection factor against UVA and UVB sunlight)
  • Use sun screen, broad spectrum, SPF 30 to 50 for intense sun exposure that is water resistant
  • Apply a generous amount of sunscreen at least 15- 20 minutes before going outside (remember to include your neck, behind your knees, your face and back)
  • Reapply sunscreen ever 2 hours or after swimming or sweating according to the product directions
  • Protect your lips with lip balm containing SPF 30 or higher

Why all the hype about skin protection because exposure to UVA / UVB can lead to aging, benign skin lesions such as seborrheic keratosis, cherry angiomas, solar lentigines to more serious skin issues such as basal and squamous cell carcinoma and unfortunately malignant melanoma.

Remember even when it is cloudy outside, UV radiation can still pass through the clouds , so is important to protect your skin.

Also every skin type needs to protect themselves from the negative effects of the sun!

One of the joys of living in Florida is to enjoy the sun, but let us protect our skin in the process.
